Happy Memorial Day!
What have you done so far this weekend?
Attended a BBQ, done a little day drinking, maybe spent the day on the lake, or maybe just relaxed at home with your family?
BUT Memorial Day is so much more than a long weekend full of BBQ parties. We should take time to remember why those of us with governmental jobs are even given today OFF.
We need to honor those who have protected our country and who have put their lives on the line. We need to honor those who are still fighting. We need to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
….so that we can mindlessly swim safely in a pool today and eat BBQ, watermelon and throw back a few beers.
Some going about today so mindlessly that they may not even realize, while they are dodging a volleyball, a soldier somewhere is dodging
a bullet bullets.
Some going about today so mindlessly they’re scarfing down a couple sandwiches, some cole slaw, a beer or few, and a bomb pop or two, while a soldier somewhere is tearing open their least favorite MRE and “enjoying” a VERY dry cracker but MAYBE he got lucky and got his favorite candy.
Memorial Day was established as a way to honor those who died in the Civil War. Do you remember learning in History class, that THIS was the bloodiest war fought on U.S. soil? According to civilwar.org “approximately 620,000 soldiers died from combat, accident, starvation, and disease during the Civil War.“
Did you also know that President Clinton signed an act stating that Americans are supposed to pause and remember the deceased at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day.
^^^THAT said. I hope today you PAUSE and remember and honor the true reason your off work today.
Below are just a few people I’d like to honor today. Thank you for ALL you’ve done and all that you do so that I can mindlessly swim in a pool today and eat BBQ.
Thank you Dad.
Thank you little Brother.
